Phased ROUSHchargers Provide Building Blocks for Horsepower

420026-377x290 LIVONIA, Mich. – As children, we learned that building blocks were fun. We could start with something small and easily add on as our imagination grew. However, as our interests turned to automobiles, it became clear that upgrades needed to be done all at once with little room to modify once installed.

Now that concept changes as ROUSH® Performance introduces a new Phased R2300 ROUSHcharger® lineup that allows a growth of horsepower and torque through the life of the unit. Owners can start at a base “Phase 1” level and grow to “Phase 2” and finally “Phase 3” as time, budget, and desire allows.

“The concept of being able to start at one level and over time increase the horsepower and torque is really unique in the automotive world, and something that I see as becoming very popular with Mustang owners,” said Jack Roush. “It used to be that when you chose a supercharger you were pretty much stuck with what you got, but these new Phased ROUSHchargers™ allow for a relatively simple upgrade process which offers major increases in horsepower.”

ROUSH® will offer several variations for 2005-2010 Mustangs in both single-belt and dual-belt configurations. This allows the buyer to choose a core system and the starting horsepower level. The biggest choice is the single- or dual-belt configuration as you can only upgrade within that platform and not change from one to the other.

In a dual-belt system the supercharger is isolated from the other FEAD components such as the alternator and water pump. This allows for a reduced belt length and the overall system inertia and demands on the belt tensioner is also greatly reduced. In turn, this provides better response when dynamic FEAD events occur, such as a hard first-second shift.

The SB Phase 1 R2300 ROUSHcharger® starts at 475 horsepower (435 lb.-ft. torque) and has a suggested retail price of $5799.00. The SB Phase 2 model jumps to 550 horsepower (500 lb.-ft. torque) and retails at $6699.00. An upgrade between these models will retail for $1499.00. These are both single-belt models which offer a lower cost option.

The dual-belt FEAD system provides a significant improvement in the robustness which allows the system to confidently handle the higher level of power in the Phase 2 and 3 systems. The DB Phase 1 R2300 ROUSHcharger® has 475 horsepower (435 lb.-ft. torque) and a suggested retail of $6999.00, while the DB Phase 2 steps up to 550 horsepower (500 lb.-ft. torque) and comes in at $7499.00.

For those wanting the most under the hood, the DB Phase 3 R2300 ROUSHcharger® will push out 625 horsepower (565 lb.-ft. torque) and retail at $12,999.00. Kits to upgrade between the dual-belt phases are available and will range in price from $2099.00 to $6499.00. The highest horsepower Phase 3 is offered only in a dual-belt configuration.

ROUSH® has long been recognized as the leader in Mustang Powertrain development, not only for the development of the hard parts, but even more importantly from the engine calibration. Our team works on calibrations for many OEM-vehicles and has a level of experience that is virtually second to none in the industry. This is a prime factor in why the ROUSHcharger® tends to run smoother and generate power through the entire curve. Each of the new Phased R2300 ROUSHchargers™ comes with a ROUSH® calibration, something ROUSH® has not previously offered.

All the Phased R2300 ROUSHchargers™ come with an air-to-water intercooler, and there is a 90-day parts-only warranty of both the SB and DB Phase 1 and 2 ROUSHchargers™. The DB Phase 3 carries a 3-year/36,000 mile warranty from the vehicle’s original in-service date, or 12-months/12,000 miles on cars already past this mark.

The Phased R2300 ROUSHcharger® line is currently available for order via the ROUSH® toll-free (800) 59-ROUSH phone number only. The kits are expected to begin shipping in mid-June.

Why would you put a 3/36 warranty on the 675hp kit but not on the 475hp which is less likely to blow up the engine? Obviously the engine the 675hp kit is going on would be built pretty well but I would think a majority of the purchases would be for the 475 kit. I for one was considering that for my 427R but will just stick with what I have now.
ROUSH: That’s a great question! This new line of ROUSHchargers was designed to allow for a range of horsepower and robustfulness, while also allowing for a range in prices to meet a given budget. With every increase in horsepower, the engine is taxed more. Although the Phase 1 and 2 kits are indeed robust, there is a level of abuse under which the engine could fail. In the Phase 3 kits, we have included specially designed engine components that enhance the structure of the engine. These components raise the level of abuse that the engine can take to a much higher level, so much so that the engineers at ROUSH have given their stamp of approval for a 3 year / 36,000 mile engine warranty (see the warranty policy for details), even at the increased level of horsepower.

Can one upgrade from a single belt to the dual belt. If so, whats the cost going to be? What kind of boost does the stage I & II dual belt systems produce? Is the crank the stock Ford crank or the Roush supplied overdrive crank?
ROUSH: No, upgrading between a single belt to dual belt is not really an option. It is best to decide in advance which you prefer. The boost for the Phase 1 kit is ~8psi. Phase 2 is ~11psi. The crankshaft for Phase 1 & 2 is the stock Ford crank. Phase 3 uses the ROUSH forged crankshaft.

  3. John Tokash says:

Can I keep my double tube Stage 3 strut tower brace with these kits? This is a big concern for me as my ’08 Roush S3 is a convertable… What would be the maximum power level recommended for a convertable?
ROUSH: No, that strut tower brack would have to be removed with a TVS ROUSHcharger. Maximum horsepower would be your individual preference.

  4. Sheppard Richardson says:

Does this new phase charger system work with automatic trans I would like the 550 hp system singel belt
ROUSH: Yes and no. They will work, but you would need to find a tuner to make a calibration for an automatic transmission. You may also need to change the spark plugs. Call our Customer Service line at 800-59-ROUSH to discuss the details.

  5. Kristopher says:

I have a ’06 GT automatic. I’d like to put a little more under the hood without having to pull the engine and rebuild the bottom end. Would you say that the kit #421102 can be safely installed on a stock 4.6L engine without drastically shortening it’s life? If so, what other recommendations would you have? Thank you for your time.
ROUSH: Kristopher, the ROUSH Customer Service Department has contacted you directly on this question.

  6. Greg says:

If the DB system runs off of its own crank pulley would I need to change the steeda under pulley back to OM ?
    ROUSH: Yes.
