Evan Smith(Editor, Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords) and his co-driver Jeff Lacina(Owner, Track Guys Performance Driving Events) piloted a 2013 ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang to a 1^st place class win in OneLap of America. The ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang aided them to the 1^st place finish in the SSGT2-Big Bore Class, 3^rd place in the Stock Division and a 16^th place overall.

As the One Lap website states, “The Tire Rack One Lap of America event is the toughest 8 days of racing featuring the fastest street-legal cars on America’s most challenging racetracks!” From May 4^th to May 12^th, Evan Smith and Jeff Lacina began their adventure when they landed in Detroit and to meet the ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang. It that would take them on the 8 day journey starting at Tire Rack in South Bend, Indiana.

“After a long week, Jeff and I (Evan) bested the field and won in our first One Lap of America race. We drove 4,043 miles, hit 10 track, traveled in 13 states and still actually like each other” Quoted Evan Smith. “As a side note we finished 16th overall, of 75 entries. The team will be running two cars at this race:  The No. 61 ROUSH Mustang, driven by Jack Roush Jr. and Billy Johnson, and the No. 51 Mustang driven by Shelby Blackstock and Jade Buford.  The No. 49 Mustang, driven by Roly Falgueras and Bryan Ortiz, will not be attending this event.

The ROUSH team is looking forward to arriving at New Jersey Motorsports Park.  It has won the last two races here and hopes to maintain its winning streak.  One thing will surely be different this year, with much a more moderate weather forecast.  The last two years events here saw extremely hot temperatures.  Some cars from last year’s race even saw cockpit temperatures exceeding 130 degree Fahrenheit.

New Jersey Motorsports Park is a fairly new track, being built in 2007.  The course includes 14 turns at a length of 2.25 miles.  Though there are a few slow-speed turns on the course, it is more of a high-speed course that may play more into the hand of the Mustangs.  However, as we’ve seen at Homestead, the current rule package may again prove advantageous to some of the other cars in the field.  Only time will tell.

Cars roll onto track tomorrow for the first day of practice.  Qualifying will be held at 10:30am on Saturday, May 12th, and the race will also be on Sat. starting at 3:15pm.  You can watch the ROUSH team’s progress through the event at Grand-Am’s web site.

WARRENDALE, Pa. (April 26, 2012) – ROUSH Performance and Ford Motorsports are  building a limited edition 2013 ROUSH® Stage 3 Ford Mustang that will be auctioned at the SAE Foundation’s 25^th Anniversary Celebration.  All proceeds will benefit SAE’s education outreach programs.

This one-of-a-kind vehicle features custom silver edition painted body and graphics, a ROUSH 5.0L Supercharged Engine featuring the Ford Racing “Aluminator” long block with a 625 hp engine and 540 ft-lbs of torque, ROUSH tuned suspension, custom SVT GT500 track pack wheels, ROUSH custom body components and a customized ROUSH interior.

The live auction will take place during the Foundation’s 25^th Anniversary Celebration, to be held Wednesday, May 16 at Ford Field.  Interested bidders may contact Renee Hayes at SAE (724-772-8508) prior to the event, or may also attend the event to participate in the live auction.  Arrangements will be made for interested parties to participate by phone during the live auction if they are unable to attend the celebration dinner.

Practice leading up to the race went fairly well.  With a lap time that put us as high as P2 in practice with a 1:26.217, the No. 61 ROUSH Mustang driven by Billy Johnson and Jack Roush Jr., looked fairly strong, as did the No. 51 Mustang, driven by Jade Buford and Shelby Blackstock.  In qualifying, the No. 51 car lead the ROUSH team times and was third fastest in the field with a 1:26.296.

Over the past few years, the ROUSH team has consistently been strong.  In 2011, the No. 61 earned a podium in all but two races.  In one of these two races, the team had an on-track incident at Daytona that ended the race, while in the other the No. 61 Mustang had a mechanical problem that put the car several laps down.  The downside of doing well in racing is that there is a strong tendency of the series to places rules on you to slow you down.  It appears that the Grand-Am rule package present at Homestead finally made it impossible to keep the team’s record of podiums going.  Despite having balanced set-ups, a lack of incidents on-track, and great pit stops, the No. 61 Mustang scored a 5th, the 51 an 11th, and the 49 a 27th place finish.

“Hopefully we will see some changes within Grand-Am heading into the upcoming race in New Jersey,” says Jack Roush Jr.  “Grand-Am has a very difficult job in trying to keep parity between vehicles that are fundamentally different.  The challenge for us right now is that our ROUSH Mustangs have historically run so well.  As a result, it is now mandated by the series that we have the smallest brakes, the highest weight, and a restrictor on an engine that is smaller to begin with than that of the Camaros.  It’s a real testament to the performance of the Ford Mustang in the series that we have done so well despite this, but given the current rules for the other cars, we are now at a significant disadvantage that is very difficult to overcome.”

About The Cars

The Silver 2013 ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang:
Before the 2013 ROUSH Mustang even starts to move, the styling cues make a statement.  The new styling components include a more aggressive front splitter, fog lamp pockets, a hood scoop, newly designed graphics, a front grille, lower grille frame out, and an updated lower rear valance.  Additional styling upgrades include side splitters, quarter window louvers, a three-piece rear wing, and a front window “ROUSH” banner.

Start the car and step on the throttle, and you will be moved by the upgraded ROUSH powertrain, producing a whopping 565hp and 505 lb-ft of torque (up from the 540hp and 465 lb-ft of the 2012 Stage 3).

The White Road Course Parts Car:
As for featuring the new line of parts for use on road courses, ROUSH started with one of its Stage 3 Mustangs.  The upgrades beyond the Stage 3 package were quite minimal but very effective for the track.  The white car featured the following:

• A racing style, carbon fiber rear wing from Kognition Design with custom mounts to fit the rear decklid.
• An EATON TrueTrac differential for optimum balance between slip and locking going into and out of the turns.
• The ROUSH Trak Pak double-adjustable suspension system.
• Sparco EVO racing seats and harnesses with custom brackets to fit the Mustang floor seat mounts.
• A roll car to increase safety and mount the belt harnesses to.
• Light-weight flow-molded D-Force wheels.
• Ultra-stick R-compound tires.
• AiM SOLO data acquisition system

About The Event
The Western Automotive Journalists association, also known as WAJ, is a group of prominent automotive reporters based in the western United States.  These journalists are car enthusiasts themselves and contribute to a wide variety of publications.

For 20 years now, WAJ heads to Monterey, California each year to host its biggest event, their “Annual Media Day.”  The event spans three days.  Day one kicks off with a car show, day two includes ride-and-drives on the roads surrounding Monterey, and day three finishes with hot laps at the legendary Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, home of the world-famous downhill “Corkscrew.”
