Concord, NC. – February 2nd, 2012 - ROUSH Performance started the 2012 Grand-Am season in strong form fielding three cars, occupying the front row in qualifying, and having two cars finish in the top 10 in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge BMW Performance 200 on Friday, Jauary 27th at Daytona International Speedway.

Rookie driver Shelby Blackstock sat the No. 51 Starstruck/Vion Ford Mustang BOSS 302R on pole with a time of 1:57.6 beating teammate Jack Roush Jr. in the No. 61 Gary Yeomans/USANA Health Sciences Ford Mustang BOSS 302R clad in the 2013 Mustang GT bodywork by less than one-tenth of a second. This mark’s Blackstock’s first career pole in professional racing. The No. 49 Micasa Ford qualified an impressive 10th place with Roly Falgueras behind the wheel.

“It’s a real honor to be wearing the ROUSH name on my suit and to qualify on pole for such an organization was really special” said an enthusiastic Blackstock. “It was great to have an all Roush front row. While I was hoping for the top spot, I’m really proud of Shelby’s accomplishment.” Roly Falgueras added “The car was very good. The ROUSH Performance team gave me a very good handling car and I was pleased to qualify in the top 10 with such tough competition.”

The green flag fell under wet conditions and with a field of anxious drivers who haven’t raced in months made for quite an exciting beginning to the season. Both Blackstock and Roush maintained a top six position keeping both cars out of harms way and raced hard into a drying track. With just under 30 minutes into the race, a yellow flag caution signaled the perfect time to switch from rain tires to dry slicks. All 3 cars came into the pits for fuel and a change of tires and were good for another hour of competition.

“I think pretty much the first hour and a half was a close moment,” Roush Jr. said of the racing. “There’s opportunities to have incidents at any moment in time, especially at the beginning of the race, it was really sketchy.”

With around an hour to go, all three cars pitted for the last time to change drivers and Billy Johnson, Jade Buford, and Brian Ortiz took over the controls for the 61, 51, and 49 respectively. Johnson made a hard charge to the front and took over the race lead on lap 41. Ortiz equally charged through the field to get the 49 into the top 10 before a last lap incident which crippled the car to limp home in a 30th place finish. Meanwhile Buford in the 51 made it through the last lap mess to finish in the 10th place in the No. 51 while Johnson and held off a gang of hard charging BMWs for the last 18 laps including two restarts for the first win of the series and first finish the Roush/Johnson Duo has had at Daytona in three years.

“First of all it’s great to finally finish this race, especially after not being able to finish in the last two years,” Johnson said. “To come here with a strong finish and start off the season on a good note rather than having to dig ourselves out of a hole with zero points is huge. I’m really proud of our team for giving all of our cars awesome pit stops, great handling cars, and Brad Francis and our crew chief ‘Lumpy’ on the pit box for making great calls. The 2013 Bodywork is beautiful and I’m glad we were able to bring the first victory to Ford in the new bodywork.”

“This was a very good points day,” said Buford “To start the season with a top-10 puts us in a good position to continue for even better finishes in the future.”

“The car was very nice to drive and I look forward to coming back again in future races,” said Ortiz.

The ROUSH Performance team is back at the shop preparing for Round two of the 2012 Grand-Am season which will be held at Barber Motorsports Park, in Birmingham, Alabama on March 30-31st.

The Daytona season-opening race will air on SPEED Channel Saturday, February 4th at 12:00pm EST.

ROUSH Performance Road Racing Team Announces Plans for 2012
Team to field three cars at Daytona

CONCORD, N.C. (Jan. 23, 2012) – The ROUSH Performance road racing team is proud to announce its plans for Daytona and the 2012 Grand-Am Continental Tire Series season. For the first time in its history, the team will field three cars in its stable at the BMW Performance 200 at Daytona International Speedway on Jan 27; The No. 61 Mustang driven by Billy Johnson (San Clemente, Calif.) and Jack Roush Jr. (Livonia, Mich.), the No. 51 Mustang driven by Shelby Blackstock (Nashville, Tenn.) and Jade Buford (Brentwood, Tenn.) and the No. 49 Mustang Driven by Roly Falgueras (Fajardo, Puerto Rico) and Bryan Ortiz (San Juan, Puerto Rico).

The #61 ROUSH Mustang has had great in the series. In the last two years (since Miller Motorsports Park in 2009), Billy Johnson and Jack Roush Jr. have earned 6 wins, 14 podiums, and 17 top five finishes. “I’m really looking forward to be back with Jack in the #61 Roush Performance Mustang this year sporting the brand new 2013 bodywork,” says Billy Johnson. “Jack and I have had two amazing seasons in 2010 and 2011 finishing 3rd and 2nd in the Championship respectively and we look to continue the consistency and trend to finish 1st in the Championship this year in 2012.”

Roly Falgueras and Bryan Ortiz

“In the past, I’ve always taken great pride in the effort put forth running as a single-car team,” said Jack Roush Jr. “Bringing in such a quality collection of drivers to work alongside with takes the program up a notch even higher. I look forward to collaborating with them all on set-up, strategy and driving technique.”

However, this is not the first time that the ROUSH Performance team has fielded a two-car effort. Last year, Blackstock and Falgueras competed against Roush and Johnson in the Continental Tire Series.

“We are very happy to again be part of the Roush family, continuing our more than 15-year relationship with them,” said Falgueras. “It’s also a real treat to once again work with Jeff Campey, who served as our crew chief in the 1995 Daytona 24 Hour race.”

Shelby Blackstock and Jade Buford

“I am very excited to be driving the No. 51 Roush Performance Boss 302R with Jade, it is a huge opportunity and we are looking forward to a great season,” said Blackstock. “Last year was a great opportunity for me to be able to drive the Roush-prepared No. 51 Mustang with Roly Falgueras and we can’t wait to build on that in 2012. I want to thank Jack Roush Jr., Roush Performance and Ford for giving me this opportunity to be able to drive this amazing race car with a top team.”

Buford and Ortiz have yet to run in a race with ROUSH Performance, but they both have years of experience running in Grand-Am, and both tested with the team at Daytona earlier this month.

“Shelby and I work very well together,” said Buford. “This showed itself during the Daytona test earlier this month where our lap times were near the top of the charts. The new Boss 302R is an outstanding car to drive. We are looking forward to a great season.”

Billy Johnson and Jack Roush Jr.

“For me it’s an honor being able to drive with the ROUSH Performance team,” said Ortiz. “I’ve driven against them many times in the past as part of the NASCAR Diversity Program. Now, thanks to Roly Falgueras, I will finally have the chance to drive with him. I watched Roly race as I was growing up in Puerto Rico. He is a smart driver with a lot of experience, and I’m sure that he will make a great teammate. I can’t wait for the race at Daytona!”

Buford and Blackstock will be driving the No. 51 Mustang for the entire 2012 season, while the list of races where the No. 49 Mustang will compete is still being determined.

The No. 61 Mustang is sponsored by Gary Yeomans Ford Lincoln (www.garyyeomansford.com), USANA Health Sciences (www.usana.com), ROUSH Performance (www.roushperformance.com), Strategic Brand Solutions (sbsolutionsllc.com), Performance Friction (www.performancefriction.com), Mechanix Wear (www. mechanix.com), OMP (www.ompamerica.com), Kooks Custom Headers (www.kookscustomheaders.com), PWR (www.pwrradiators.com), BMRS (www.bmrs.net), and GoPro (gopro.com). The No. 51 Mustang is sponsored by Starstruck and ViON (www.vion.com), and the No. 49 Mustang is sponsored by MicasaFord.com.

The Continental Tire Series race takes place at 1:30pm (EST) on Friday, Jan. 27th. For more information on the event, please visit www.Grand-Am.com.

DETROIT MUSCLE | REDEFINED
For Immediate Release
Contact: Tony Marszalek (Director, Performance Products) tony.marszalek@roush.com

PLYMOUTH, Mich. (January 12, 2012) – The Ford F-Series has been the #1 selling vehicle in North America for several years and has always been an integral part of ROUSH®
Performance’s product line up. With Ford launching four new engines for the 2011+ F-150,
ROUSH has added more horsepower and throaty tunes to enhance all four new F-150
powertrains.

Among the new engines are two new beefy V-8’s. ROUSH has developed new ROUSHcharger supercharger systems for both the 6.2L and the 5.0L V-8 powertrains. Both the 6.2L and 5.0L supercharger systems will be available as a non-calibrated TUNER kit and a ROUSH calibrated kit. All systems will come complete with ROUSH’s 2.3L TVS R2300 supercharger featuring Eaton’s new TVS Technology. The new Twin Vortices Series features four-lobe rotors with high-flow inlet and outlet ports that greatly enhance thermal efficiency, enabling greater volumetric capacity at higher RPM’s. The systems also include ROUSH’s new cold air induction system, 100 mm MAF tube, twin 60mm throttle body, and high efficiency intercooler system featuring a dual-core low temp radiator, degas bottle and high capacity air-to-water intercooler. The 5.0L TUNER kit is now available for immediate delivery and the 5.0L ROUSH calibrated kit is available for delivery in early February 2012. The 6.2L TUNER kit will be available for delivery in mid January 2012 with the 6.2L ROUSH calibrated kit available for delivery in early April 2012. All kits are available for pre-order immediately by calling 800-59-ROUSH or www.roushperformance.com.

In addition to F-150 supercharger kits, ROUSH Performance has also launched cold air induction systems for all four F-150 powertrains including the 3.7L V-6, the 6.2L and 5.0L V-8’s as well as the 6.2L V-8 in the Super Duty. These kits have been engineered and tested to ensure MAF signal performance (including airflow vs. voltage and signal noise) are transparent to factory settings, which is why the ROUSH kit does not require a unique calibration and offer better air flow providing increased horsepower and better fuel economy along with improved throttle response. These kits are designed and manufactured using OE materials for structural stability and durability. The clean air tubes are injection molded and designed for maximum air flow efficiency. All kits are designed for easy installation requiring no drilling or cutting. The F-150 V-8 cold air induction systems include an open element upper air box, washable high-flow air filter, new MAF tube, clean air tube and all required hardware. The V-6 systems and Super Duty system all include an open element upper air box, washable high-flow air filter, new MAF tube and all required hardware. All cold air kits are available for immediate delivery.

Rounding out the F-150 product line up is the new ROUSH dual-tip, stainless steel, high
performance cat back exhaust system. ROUSH has developed one system to work with the
6.2L-V8, the 5.0L-V8 and the 3.5L V6 Ecoboost powertrains and every cab and bed length
configuration. The ROUSH high performance cat back exhaust system has been engineered to provide increased air flow and less back pressure to help reach the trucks full potential in horsepower and torque. The system turns the normally quiet stock exhaust note into rumbling muscular tune….music to any performance enthusiast’s ear, while eliminating any in-cab drone. The muffler is made from high grade 409 stainless steel and polished, as is the outlet pipe. The dual tips are made from 304 stainless steel, polished, and are then finished with a chrome flashing process. Conventional chrome plating uses layers of bonded chemicals to achieve its shiny appearance, which are susceptible to cracking and flaking especially when exposed to high temperatures (like exhaust). However, the chrome flashing used in this system is bonded micro-porously to the metal surface, and is as a result impervious to cracking from localized damage. This method of chroming is also resistant to heat color change. This exhaust system will be available for pre-orders beginning January 2012 with orders shipping out late February 2012.

The full line of ROUSH Performance F-150 products are available for order, or pre-order, via ROUSH’s toll-free (800) 59-ROUSH phone number. The kits are expected to begin shipping now through early April 2012.

Anyone who is interested in motorsports knows the flow of a race itself. Of course, every different series has its own natural flow to a race — how often you need fuel and tires and whether or not you can tune the suspension during the course of a race, but what about the days leading up to an event? Hardcore fans of a racing series that is well covered by the media can get some good insight into the pre-race preparation, but it would be hard to truly get a glimpse into the closed door discussion and other processes that are critical to being competitive. What I’d like to do in this article is to walk through this process to shed some light on some things that can win or lose a race before it even begins.

Unloading The Race Car From The Hauler

When our #61 ROUSH Performance Mustang shows up at the track, there’s a lot of work to do before it rolls out onto the track. Hopefully, the crew has already had the chance to do the regular maintenance back at the shop before this point in time. If that’s not the case, then they have to get it all done in time at the track. By “regular maintenance,” I’m referring to pretty much anything and everything that you can expect will need to be done between races. This is a long list, and it can change depending on incidents or problems that happened at the previous race. Even if the entire list of regular maintenance has been completed prior to being loaded into the truck, there is still plenty to do at the track. These tasks can include scaling the car, checking the engine oil, verifying that the battery has a good charge, checking the brakes, running the engine and looking for any potential issues with our AIM data acquisition system, rolling the car up to the series’ technical inspectors to make sure that they have no issues with the car… The list goes on, but you get the idea. A lot of these may seem mundane and unimportant. However, if you miss something, which is very easy to do, you could break down before the end of the race, run poorly, or fail the post-race technical inspection. Any of these outcomes would obviously make the entire effort a failure.

View from walking the track at Barber Motorsports Park

Now that the maintenance and initial preparation are out of the way, what next? For preparation as drivers, my co-driver, Billy Johnson, and I try to walk the track as much as possible. This may seem like another mundane task that wouldn’t make a difference, but, trust me, it matters. Many of my best runs have been at events where we have walked the track. I began walking tracks with my father while gokart racing in my elementary school years. It helped me then just as it does today — I personally consider it to be a critical part of my own preparation.

Why is walking the track so important? The answer is pretty simple. When driving on the track at speed, it is impossible to see all of the subtleties of the track. Also, the G-forces acting on your body have a strong tendency to distort your perception of the track’s shape. As an example, try walking up a banked turn at a track like Daytona. You’ll feel like Spiderman walking up a wall. However, in a racecar going at speed on that same banking, it will feel far more flat. Scenarios in which haing this undistorted view of the track are two-fold: (1) When there is an uphill section of track going into a turn or braking zone, the incline will give the car more ability to brake and turn than you might otherwise expect; and (2) when there is a downward fall-off to the track, the effect will be the opposite of that from an incline (braking and turning will be harder to pull off).

When I say that we’re looking for subtleties while walking the track, I mean it. A slight crown in the road or a small dip could have some grand effects on where the fast line is. And then there’s the part about going off-track. What if you need to put two tires off the road while battling someone for position? Will a rut or soft gravel just off the curb cause parts to be ripped of the car by speed bumps? Often, you can only get a good sense of this by walking the track and looking very closely to the area just off the track.

The #51 ROUSH Mustang manuevering through traffic

Ok, now things get a little more exciting: We now get on-track (in the racecar). At this point, the driver should be up to speed. It’s rare that we go to tracks that we’ve never been to before, but even if we do, I get familiar with new tracks in the weeks and months leading up to the race by watching in-car video and driving on it in the iRacing.com simulator (I did this last year at Road America with good results).

With the drivers being up to speed, there really should not be more than a lap of warm up before hitting it hard. The warm up should be used to test the grip levels on the track, get the tires up to the right temperatures and pressures, and get some heat into the brakes.

Once you’re up to speed, the next thing to do is to try some variation in driving (braking points, line, etc.), but this should be pretty subtle — these should all be in the ballpark. However, the most important part of this first session is to get some sense of what the car itself is doing. Is it loose? Is it tight? Is there power-on oversteer? Once we generate this type of feedback, we can then play the Rubic’s Cube game of car set-up to balance the car.

Regarding the car’s set-up, it is misleading to suggest that this only starts after the car rolls out onto the track. In actuality, at least on our team, this work begins back at the shop. Our crew chief, Jeff Campey, has a wealth of racing experience and wisdom. He’s been working with my father now for over twenty years, and one of the ways that he’s shown this in our program is by looking at his notes from previous events, considering the characteristics of the track that we’re about to go to, and making his best guess on what the set-up should be. Sometimes, the car will be so balanced right out of the truck that we won’t make a single change. Nailing a set-up like that is a very hard thing to do.

Jeff Campey ("Lumpy") Overlooking Run

You’ll see this same thing happening in NASCAR. In that series, the top teams all have very advanced engineering modeling programs that simulate a car’s run on a track and come up with an optimized set-up. In fact, in NASCAR, you can simply not compete without showing up with a set-up that’s already very close to being spot-on. We don’t have the budget or resources to have this type of work done for our Grand-Am program. So, I’m thankful that we have the grey-matter simulators to work with.

So, what are we really looking for in a set-up? That can seem like a simple question to answer, but it is far from. Is it simply the fastest? Surprisingly, the answer is no. It’s not hard to dial a car in to turn a fast lap. If you stiffen the car up to use up as much of the grip in the tires as quickly as possible without being unbalanced, you might turn a few quick laps. It might even get you the pole in qualifying. The problem with that, though, is that the tires will be so used up by the end of an hour or hour-and-a-half run that it won’t be anywhere near competitive. The question then becomes what set-up will give you the best speed over the entire run, especially at the end where a yellow flag can create some intensely close racing. The teams that can answer this question are the ones that you can expect to run well, week in and week out.

ROUSH Performance road racing team fuel strategists at work

Now, we’re almost ready for the race. Our car is fully prepared and tuned and the drivers are fairly up to speed. What else is left? There are just three things to address:

Fuel strategy. During the course of practice, we have gathered good data on what the car’s fuel mileage is. We can then take this data and determine what our window is between fuelings.

Pit stop practice. This involves three elements: 1) The tire change; 2) refueling; and 3) the driver change. A hiccup in any one of these can have disastrous effects. On the other hand, if your team makes the effort to practice their pit stops, you might even pick-up a spot or two while in the pits. Practicing at the track prior to the race is a good way to reinforce the muscle memory needed to pull-off a decent pit stop.

Review AIM data to perfect driving technique. I mentioned that the drivers should be fairly up to speed right out of the box, but you don’t win races by just being “fairly” up to speed. To truly do well, you must master your technique at the given track. An experienced driver should have good intuition in what is generally fast, but what about that final half second per lap that can sustain through the course of a race? In my experience, that final step only comes through analyzing subtle variations in driver inputs (braking, steering, and throttle) to determine what is truly the fastest. At this level of refinement, intuition can’t get you there alone. You need to have a good data acquisition system.

Stay tuned for an upcoming article where I’ll go into detail on how you can use an AIM data acquisition system to improve your driving technique.

The new year of 2012 has just begun, and the first Grand-Am test of the season is only a few days away. On Friday January 6th, the #61 ROUSH Performance Mustang will roll out onto Daytona International Raceway, piloted by myself and Billy Johnson. Although, this time will be different than in years past, with two additional cars running with us on our team. Jade Buford and Shelby Blackstock will be piloting the #51 Mustang, and Roly Falguerres and Brian Ortiz will be in the #49 Mustang. This will mark the first time that we’ve had two additional cars in our stable at any event.

I’ve always liked Daytona. We have run well there, running very competitive lap times, but looking at the results of the past two years there, you might not think that this was the case. In 2010, we were forced to stop the race early due to an engine problem, and last year we had a crash early in the race that yet again stopped our run. This track has stood out for both years (in not finishing) because of how strong we ran throughout each season. Other than Daytona and Laguna Seca (where we had a mechanical issue with the car that ended our race), we podiumed at every single event and had an average finish of 1.875. Had we not had that bad start to the season, we would have easily won the season. Needless to say, we are determined to show our strength early in the season with a good finish here in 2012.

Of course, it will be tough as always. The field in the Continental Tire Series is easily one of the most competitive road racing series in the U.S. Teams are constantly improving their game, just as we are, and unceasing rule changes have a tendency to shift the advantage around in a way that can be unpredictable. But then again, if it was easy, what would be the point?

I’d like to thank our sponsors for their support going into the 2012 season: Gary Yeomans Ford, USANA Health Sciences, ROUSH Performance, Strategic Brand Solutions, Mechanix Wear, BMRS, PWR, RAM, Performance Friction, OMP, Kooks Custom Headers, and GoPro. I’d also like to thank Ford Motor Company for providing us a great platform on which to race. Not only does the Mustang have ample power to compete with the best from around the world, but it also has the fuel economy and handling capabilities to make the car do well over the long run.

It’s been four months since our last event in September at Mid-Ohio. Our team is eager to get things rolling once again, and I have great faith in our team to continue our momentum going into 2012.

Stay tuned for more updates soon…
