JOLIET, Ill. (July 30, 2006) – The ROUSH Performance
drag program had a solid
weekend during the July 28-30 Motive Gear NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing at
Route 66 Raceway.
With motorsports legend Jack Roush on-site as the event Grand Marshal, both his son Jack Roush,
Jr. and daughter Susan Roush- McClenaghan made it to the third round in their racing classes
before being eliminated. This was the deepest that any of the ROUSH teams cars had gone
in NMRA competition this season, though this was only the second event the team has officially
participated in.
In Open Comp, Susan had a near-perfect reaction time of .001 seconds several times during the
weekend which put fear into all those who staged next to her. Unfortunately, her reaction
time was just a hair too quick in the third round of eliminations – by a scant .009 seconds –
and lost her match due to a red light (which means she left the starting line too quickly
before the countdown was completed). She had a near perfect run in the first round with a
.001 reaction time and a pass of 11.940 seconds/115.11 mph. This was so close to her dial-in
time of 11.93 seconds that she was almost a lock to win no matter what her competitor ran.
Jack Roush, Jr. stepped into the 2001 ROUSH Mustang for the first time this season, and also
had a successful start. He made it to the third round before being eliminated despite
posting a 10.815 second/118.48 mph pass which was just .035 seconds off his 10.78 second dial
in. Unfortunately, his competitor was just a bit closer to his break-out time. This
Mustang Roush Jr. drove is the primary vehicle used for the modular engine development.
Paul Burke, also in his first event as a driver in the ROUSH Performance drag program, won his
first round in Modular Muscle competition but was eliminated in the second. Burke was the
third quick qualifier in the field of 37 cars, a bright spot for the team. His red 2005
Mustang is the car used for the testing of the line of Competition Parts under development.
Dale McCleneghan, piloting the ’67 Cougar, was also a first round winner who got knocked from
competition by red lighting in the next matchup.
Sadly, the team’s two affiliated cars driven by Don Bowles and his son Donnie were eliminated
in the first round of Modular Muscle competition. Don unveiled his new yellow 2006
ROUSHcharged Mustang which was able to run consistently down the quarter mile in the nine-second
range; this car received a lot scrutiny from the fans and competitors when it sat in the pit area
as it is a beautiful race car.
As the Grand Marshal of the race, Roush spoke to the crowd during the opening ceremonies and
held an autograph session which was extremely well attended despite the record temperatures
and heat index which hovered at 107 degrees. He was also taken for a 10-second ride down
the strip in Bowles’ Mustang, the first time Roush had been in a drag car in nearly 25 years.
Overall, it was an excellent representation by the ROUSH Performance team and much valuable
information was gained on the research and development side for both the upcoming line of
Competition Parts and performance engines. |
