Where Roush Played as a Boy He Will Race as an Adult

LIVONIA, Mich. – One of the uphill battles facing Jack Roush, Jr. in his inaugural season of KONI Challenge racing is the fact that he has never seen most of the racetracks on the schedule.  Not so, however, with Lime Rock Park, the site of this weekend’s Grand-Am GT Classic.


Admittedly, Roush's experience at Lime Rock Park won't help him compete on the racetrack.  You see, the last time he was at the Lakeville, Conn., facility he was just a 12-year-old boy.

Now, on the eve of his return to Lime Rock Park two decades later, the memories of his time as a youth watching his father manage his race teams came flooding back.

"There are so many memories of me hanging around the racetrack with my Dad (motorsports legend and NASCAR team owner Jack Roush, Sr.) that the dates become sort of hazy, but certain things do stand out," Roush explained.  "I certainly remember that one of the biggest competitors to Dad's teams were the Porsche GTP cars.

"Back then the Porsche teams had a really large budget and were extremely fierce competitors.  Dad was still successful racing against them with much smaller budgets, but it was a challenge for sure.  That is a little ironic considering that I am now racing against Porsche teams, we still have a small budget, and they are still tough to get by on the racetrack."

Roush mentioned that one thing he recalls about his father's former days of Trans-Am and IMSA-GT programs was how he would go into a series, adapt his cars and be successful.  Consequently the rules would be changed to reign in the Roush teams, but Jack Roush Sr. would simply start the cycle all over again by adapting to the new circumstances.

RoushJr377x283 Another memory that Roush has of Lime Rock Park is riding all around the racetrack on a small motorcycle.

"Oh yeah, I would ride all around the infield and the racetrack on this small little motorcycle.  I would go riding around so fast that inevitably the officials would come and ask that I no longer ride it at the track for the rest of the weekend.  Seems like that used to happen at most of the tracks," he recalled with a laugh.

The Grand-Am GT Classic begins on Friday with two practice sessions on the 1.53-mile natural road course for the GS class that Roush competes in.  Qualifying is on Saturday, with the green flag for the 400 kilometer (163-lap) race flying on Monday, May 28 at 10 a.m. (EDT).  No events are scheduled for Sunday.

Though this event will not be televised live, the complete results and live timing and scoring can be found online at www.Grand-Am.com.  The race will be broadcast tape-delayed on SPEED Channel on June 10 at 3 p.m. (EDT).

Roush, a native of Livonia, Mich., is co-driver of the No. 59 ROUSH Performance Mustang with Dean Martin.  The team currently sits 12th in the KONI Challenge GS class standings.
