61 Mustang Close 2nd Place Finish at Road America

ROUSH 61 and 51 Qualifying Road AmericaFor the second year in a row, Jack Roush Jr and Billy Johnson drove the 61 ROUSH Performance® Mustang to a 2nd place finish at Road America. Jack was able to qualify 5th in the #61 ROUSH Mustang, while Jade Buford was able to solidify 12th position in the #51 car with Shelby Blackstock. Unfortunately, Jade got turned around before the start/finish line and ended up putting the #51 ROUSH Mustang into the wall – ending their day before it started.

Jack Roush Jr, was able to keep the #61 ROUSH Mustang in the top 5 for his stint behind the wheel, before handing the car off to Billy Johnson. After only a few laps, Billy made his way to the front of the pack, leading the race at Road America.  There were a total of seven cautions, which found Johnson fending off a hard charging #13 RumBum Porsche, and the #96 Turner M3. On one of the restarts, the #13 RumBum Porsche was able to pass Johnson in a late-braking maneuver. This move would prove to be the decisive factor allowing the #13 RumBum Porsche to edge out Johnson/Roush by only .611 seconds, despite Billy Johnson’s best last-ditch efforts of an inside move in the last corner of the last lap.

"All of the yellow flags actually helped us a ROUSH 61 Mustang at Road Americalot" said Johnson. "There was at least 3 restarts late in the race that only went on for 3-5 laps which allowed me to keep the tires and brakes cool to pressure the RumBum Porsche.  If it wasn't for those yellows, our lap times would have fell drastically, as our much heavier car would burn up the tires and front brakes. We just didn't have anything for that car in the brakes or down the straight."

This Road America podium finish moves Jack Roush Jr and Billy Johnson up to 4th in their chase for the Championship, with only 4 more races to go in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.
